Module 1: Introduction
Introduces the user to the concept of risk assessment and sets learning objectives for the course.
The module answers the important question of why risks need to be assessed in a methodical way to
help avoid subjectivity and provide a consistent and effective method of control.
Module 2: Key stages
Focuses on the theory of risk control and assessment and splits it into three key areas using an
illustrated example of a fire incident:
1. Techniques for hazard identification.
2. Rating risk likelihood and severity.
3. The application of different types of risk controls is then explored, so that this module provides an insight into how risk can be minimised for any given situation.
The module offers plenty of down to earth advice on applying the theory of risk control to real-life
situations. A combination of cartoons, illustrations, diagrams and photos are used to enhance the
learning messages throughout.
Module 3: Human factors
Emphasises the need to accommodate certain ‘human factors’ such as knowledge and experience, into the
overall risk control process.
Module 4: Risk assessment in practice
Provides a worked example of applying risk control strategies to a typical piece of office equipment, a
photocopier. The running of the equipment is explained and then the associated hazards that may occur
are identified. The user is then invited to undertake a number of interactive exercises to help them
practice the identification of hazards, the control of these hazards, and achieving a significant
reduction in risk in a cost-effective, practical, way.
Module 5: Summary
Brings together the key messages found in the earlier parts of the course, and summarises them into a
clear set of key points. These can act as a checklist for the successful implementation of risk control
in any given area of a business or work process. The ability to print a course certificate and employers
record marks the end of this module.
Each module comprises learning content and a short quiz to reinforce the points made.
