Effects of stress on binge drinking
Stress, the plague of the 21st century, has been recognised as a major cause of alcohol abuse and binge drinking. A study by the insurer Royal & Sun Alliance found that at least one in six workers admitted being under the influence of alcohol at work in the past six months and at least a quarter of this group struggled to do their jobs because of it.

The impact on sickness / absence figures was also highlighted with two million staff taking one or more days off sick due to hangovers or alcohol related illness. Many workers drink purely to get drunk and as a means of relaxing and blame Workplace Stress as the reason for this behaviour.
