Manual Handling Awareness Training


Manual handling activities are the cause of numerous accidents in the workplace and also long term disorders such as back pain and reduced mobility. This 1 day course will enable delegates to look carefully at their own work activities and contribute to the development of safer methods and tasks in co-operation with their managers and supervisors.

Learning objectives

At the end of the course delegates should be able to:
  • Explain what is meant by the term 'manual handling'
  • Explain how manual handling can cause injuries and give examples
  • State the principles for controlling manual handling risks and apply them in a practical context
  • Demonstrate a general understanding of the value and purpose of conducting a manual handling assessment and what employees can expect of such assessments

  • Introduction: What is Manual Handling?
  • The responsibilities imposed by the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
  • Manual handling injuries
  • Completing manual handling assessments
  • Controlling the risks
  • Safer handling techniques
Where possible, the organisation's existing policies, procedures and documentation will be used during the course to ensure that delegates understand:
  • The organisation's policy/procedures relating to manual handling
  • Their role and responsibilities
  • How to complete any forms and documentation provided
  • Where to find further information and help within the organisation
  • The organisation's health & safety management system

On successful completion of the course, delegates receive a certificate of attendance which may be used for Continued Professional Development (CPD)/NVQ.
