Reductions in accident rates of up to 50% come from driver training programmes Research produced by RAC Risk Management consistently shows the direct benefit of driver training is up to a 50% reduction in accidents, and in turn insurance premiums. Better driving skills also result in lower wear and tear on the vehicle with associated significant savings in the costs of new tyres, brakes, clutches etc.
Henkel UK has implemented a programme of driver training over the last six years that has reduced their accident rate from 51% to 34%. Their average direct cost per accident is £1,300 so this means a saving of £96,000 a year. In addition their insurance premium has reduced by £35 per vehicle, when the prevailing trend has been an increase of £40 per vehicle per year, thereby saving £34,000 a year.
Similarly Kodak found that claims involving those who had participated in the programme reduced by 77%. The cost per claim (severity factor) reduced by 34% and the frequency rate slowed by 335%.
Of course driver training will help you comply with your legal duty of care, and sends a positive message to your employees showing you are concerned about their safety. There is though also a hidden cost of accidents, thought to be at least four times the direct cost, which is even more justification to invest in suitable training.
