Employers 'unaware' of transport hazards
It is a given that housing associations will have travelling agents who use vehicles. However, many UK employees remain in the dark about workplace transport risks, a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) study has revealed.
The HSE questioned a sample of businesses from five major sectors of industry and found that:
28% had not performed a risk assessment that considered workplace transport issues;
26% provided no training for their workplace transport operators; 57% were unaware of HSE's workplace transport safety initiative.
The findings have given rise to a number of recommendations aimed at improving awareness of workplace transport issues, including:
- More education on the dangers associated with workplace transport, particularly with respect to lack of supervision, reversing and inadequate safe systems of work.
- Increased training for workplace transport operators.
- A need to promote greater awareness of the duty to perform risk assessments on workplace transport systems.
