Hazard and operability studies

This course aims to introduce managers and others who may become involved in Hazard and Operability studies (HAZOP) exercises, to the correct approach and techniques employed.

When carrying out risk assessments of activities where there is the potential for a serious incident such as an explosion or major toxic release it is essential that all possible causes of such an incident are identified. Hazard and operability studies (HAZOP) have become a standard technique for identifying such risks.

HAZOP is a team-based technique employing a ‘brain-storming’ approach supported by a clearly defined structure and ‘key-word’ prompts.

On completion of this course you will be able to: „„

  • Understand the basis of a HAZOP study, its benefits and limitations.
  • „„Identify those circumstances where it would be an appropriate technique to employ.
  • Understand the make-up of an effective HAZOP team. „„
  • Understand the roles of the chairman and scribe. „„
  • Understand the way in which a HAZOP is structured. „„
  • Understand the information which results from the study and how this can be used in the wider risk assessment context.
  • What is a HAZOP and when is it appropriate? „„
  • What is the composition of a HAZOP team. „„
  • The role of the HAZOP Chairman. „„
  • Selection of necessary documentation. „„
  • Breaking a process into ‘nodes’. „„
  • Application of key-words to process variables. „„
  • Categorising output, e.g. safety critical, efficiency, quality etc. „„
  • Using the output to identify how safety critical incidents can arise. „„
  • Selection of appropriate control measures for critical situations. „„
  • Recording output.
