The Kevin Storey Award for Outstanding Commitment to Road Safety recognises the organisation or individual who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in commitment to road safety, not just within the company but also the wider community. The award is presented at the Fleet Safety Forum Awards, organised by the road safety charity Brake. Cardinus expert Dave Abbott was announced as the 2011 winner last month.

Mr Abbott said, “Having helped a number of my customers to win fleet industry awards over the years, it’s nice to actually win one myself. I’m surprised and delighted.

“Awards are a great way of raising the profile of the work being done by companies like Cardinus, but they’re not why we do it. We do it to save lives.”

Mr Abbott is acknowledged as an industry expert in the field of fleet risk management. Having spent 30 years in the police service, he transferred his skills to the fleet driver training industry.

Ten years ago Mr Abbott established Active Risk Management, now part of Cardinus Risk Management. He has been instrumental in the re-engineering of the business from the provision of advanced driver training through to a complete risk management solution enabling clients to meet legal obligations and achieve cost savings.

He is responsible for many strategic partnerships with other businesses that share similar objectives. Motor manufacturers, insurers and vehicle leasing companies use Cardinus services for their customers. Many large companies use Mr Abbott as their fleet risk management consultant.

In his spare time Mr Abbott races a Formula Three car. As a steward for the Motor Sports Association, he is heavily involved with running motor race meetings at circuits across the country.
