In recent years there has been an increase in the use of behavioural safety or behaviour modification approaches to safety.
According to the HSE an organisation’s culture will influence human behaviour and human performance at work and can have as big an influence on safety outcomes as a safety management system.
Achieving behavioural change is vital to preventing accidents and for helping employers and their workforce improve standards and work smarter. Poor safety culture has contributed to many major incidents and personal injuries.
There is a wide range of programmes available, but they generally involve the definition of safe / unsafe behaviours, observations of behaviours and feedback / reinforcement of behaviours and can be expensive. This need not be the case.
The Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) have been working on assessing safety culture using their Safety Climate Tool for some time now and it has been successfully used by employers to help influence change on high profile sites such as the London Olympics.
Mark Preston, Head of Cardinus Safety Consultancy has also been involved in the practical development of onsite programmes and will relate his experience in running such programmes.
HSL and Cardinus are now working together with the Safety Climate Tool so the forum will allow you to get an understanding of how the Safety Climate Tool can be used in your organisation to improve the safety culture and the growing influence and importance of behavioural change within health and safety.
