Stress is a subject talked about by many but only truly understood by a few. The truth is stress means different things to different people and we all need a small amount of stress in our everyday lives.
When defining stress you can use the Health and Safety Executive definition: The adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them at work.
Or you might prefer to simply define it as: The rate of wear and tear of the body systems caused by everyday life.
Whatever definition you prefer, we must understand what the stressors are within our respective workplaces before we can begin to control them. Once understood a holistic plan needs to be created, involving employees at all levels, and communicated to the workplace. The plan needs to be seen as a long-term project and should be regularly reviewed.
If you feel that stress is a risk that is becoming a concern, talk to one of the Cardinus health and safety consultants. We can help with policy development and implementation, deliver training courses or help you deliver effective stress risk assessments.
