{"id":376,"date":"2015-12-07T15:48:45","date_gmt":"2015-12-07T15:48:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cardinus.com\/us\/?p=376"},"modified":"2022-08-05T12:06:03","modified_gmt":"2022-08-05T16:06:03","slug":"put-wellness-team-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cardinus.com\/us\/insights\/health-and-safety\/put-wellness-team-together\/","title":{"rendered":"Put a Wellness Team Together"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post-content\">\n<p><strong>One person can champion health and\u00a0well-being at work but with a wellness team\u00a0behind them they can make it happen.\u00a0Judi Ulrey explains how.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start by considering the purpose of\u00a0a wellness program. There are plenty\u00a0of sensible reasons for wanting a fit and\u00a0healthy workforce and for an employer two\u00a0of the most compelling are to lower the risk of injuries and to reduce workplace stress.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the most common tactics that can be\u00a0adopted are encouraging employees to be\u00a0more active and teaching them how to make\u00a0better food choices.\u00a0These are all noble intentions and any success\u00a0certainly benefits everyone. But what we need to\u00a0remember is most adults have spent 20-40 years\u00a0fine tuning their bad habits. And we all love our\u00a0routines. So is it feasible to suggest that a junior\u00a0HR person, as part of her job responsibilities, can\u00a0realistically support hundreds of employees in\u00a0making challenging changes?<\/p>\n<p>What is needed is a support team \u2013\u00a0a wellness team \u2013 a significant number of\u00a0employees who are committed to being\u00a0change agents. They know that if they commit\u00a0to supporting their colleagues in making more\u00a0healthy choices, they themselves are more likely\u00a0to stay on track too. When they\u2019re invited to\u00a0support someone else they will feel empowered\u00a0and motivated. You\u2019re encouraging them by\u00a0asking them to help another.<\/p>\n<p>So consider this: if you don\u2019t have a company\u00a0wellness committee, you are doing yourself\u00a0AND your employees a disservice. So how do\u00a0you recruit these internal change agents?<\/p>\n<p>First, senior management should be invited\u00a0and do some of the inviting. Those who step up\u00a0should be assured support, acknowledgement,\u00a0and time allocated during their working days to\u00a0wave the fitness flag.<\/p>\n<p>What does a wellness team member look like?\u00a0They look like everybody else. He\u2019s not perfectly\u00a0fit. She likes chocolate. He has a bit of a belly.\u00a0She\u2019s irregular in her exercise. He drinks beer.\u00a0She\u2019s frustrated with her weight. Do you think\u00a0you have any employees who fit this profile?\u00a0Of course you do.<\/p>\n<p>Point being, anyone and everyone should be\u00a0on your wellness team. If someone isn\u2019t in a\u00a0place to commit to the monthly meetings,\u00a0maybe he can be responsible for promoting the\u00a0monthly wellness message at his department\u00a0meetings every month. Maybe you have a\u00a0contest crew who rally every time there\u2019s an incentive program, encouraging all to join in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardinus.com\/us\/global-ergonomics-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1027 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cardinus.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/cardinus_healthy_working_us_1_blog_banner.jpg\" alt=\"Office Ergonomics Assessment Software\" width=\"883\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cardinus.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/cardinus_healthy_working_us_1_blog_banner.jpg 883w, https:\/\/www.cardinus.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/cardinus_healthy_working_us_1_blog_banner-768x210.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 883px) 100vw, 883px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Remember, when you encourage another you\u00a0encourage yourself. So the more employees\u00a0who are engaged \u2013 some way, somehow \u2013\u00a0the more will be making more healthy choices.\u00a0You want everyone to take part, even on a small\u00a0scale. This suggests offering multiple levels of\u00a0engagement. Consider three levels\u00a0of employee participation:<\/p>\n<h3>Vision team<\/h3>\n<p>This is your key group of employees who are\u00a0intently committed to wellness promotion within\u00a0their department\/office. They meet monthly,\u00a0either live or via teleconference. They understand\u00a0monthly meeting participation is expected at this\u00a0level. This group should be well recognized by\u00a0senior management as critical to culture change\u00a0and be given regular acknowledgement.<\/p>\n<h3>Activities team<\/h3>\n<p>These folks spearhead the various activities\u00a0\u2013 lunch and learns, walks, contests, monthly\u00a0reinforcement activities and quiz.<\/p>\n<p>Again, the more the merrier,\u00a0as two, three, four flag wavers\u00a0are better than one. If you allow\u00a0them to volunteer for less than\u00a0a full year you\u2019ll increase participation\u00a0and enthusiasm. Maybe they commit to six\u00a0months but stay on thereafter. They report to\u00a0the wellness team representative at their location.<\/p>\n<h3>Support team<\/h3>\n<p>Never underestimate the power of the one-time\u00a0volunteers. These people are on call to help\u00a0wherever there is a need. One month they may\u00a0help facilitate the quiz. Another month they\u2019re\u00a0doing lunch room demos. Maybe they simply\u00a0help their wellness committee representative\u00a0with admin duties. Gather a list of support\u00a0volunteers you can call on when you need\u00a0hands on deck.<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s a wellness team to do? What\u00a0exactly does it mean to \u2018facilitate change\u2019?\u00a0There are multiple options for engagement.\u00a0Activities team members may pick one or more:<\/p>\n<h3>Communications<\/h3>\n<p>Communication is key, and with today\u2019s\u00a0technology, we\u2019re inundated with messages.\u00a0It\u2019s all too easy to press the delete key. The\u00a0more the personal the message, the more likely\u00a0people are to read it. We pick up when we\u00a0see a friend\u2019s number on our phone. We don\u2019t\u00a0when it\u2019s withheld. The same is true of your\u00a0wellness communications. People are much more\u00a0likely to read if their department wellness team member had mentioned it than if it\u2019s simply more\u00a0stuff from corporate. Many companies choose\u00a0one person to be in charge of communications.\u00a0But what if she\u2019s on vacation? Or simply gets\u00a0too busy? Who\u2019s her back-up? You don\u2019t want\u00a0momentum to lag just because someone\u2019s\u00a0sunning on the beach.<\/p>\n<h3>Show time<\/h3>\n<p>Keeping practical wellness messages consistently\u00a0in the forefront is critical foundation\u00a0building. Many work groups have\u00a0regular monthly meetings. Add some variety\u00a0and take five minutes to discuss a new topic each month. A person from each of\u00a0these departments\/shifts who facilitates this\u00a0discussion each month adds great value to\u00a0your wellness team.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Monthly activities<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you present a new fitness focus each month,\u00a0what if you invited a few employees to coordinate\u00a0a demo or activity to reinforce the message?\u00a0Maybe you get a new team of folks every\u00a0few months to encourage new ideas, more\u00a0involvement and avoid burn-out.<\/p>\n<h3>Monthly quiz<\/h3>\n<p>To encourage all to engage in your monthly\u00a0wellness topic, offer incentives for completing\u00a0a short quiz. Designate a quiz team or two.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Small groups<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The best teachers of your employees are your\u00a0employees. Whether it is sharing\u00a0healthy recipes, tips\u00a0for fitting exercise into a busy day, or simply\u00a0accountability, small groups offer personal\u00a0support. All you need is a facilitator who\u2019s a good\u00a0question-asker. Find folks from each of your\u00a0departments who would be willing to facilitate\u00a0a small group gathering. Remember, helping\u00a0another will help them too.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, let\u2019s look at lauding and applauding\u00a0your wellness team. Multiple studies have been done\u00a0on employee satisfaction. What do we want from\u00a0our job and our supervisors? Results confirm that aknowledgement by the boss goes a LONG way.\u00a0People like to help. People like supporting others.<\/p>\n<p>People like making a difference. But they like it a\u00a0whole lot more after their boss says, \u201cThank you\u00a0so much for all your help on the wellness team.\u00a0I appreciate your efforts!\u201d So Mr Big Boss, consider sending personal, hand-written\u00a0notes, Starbucks cards, a\u00a0few pats on the back.\u00a0Your accolades make\u00a0a difference. As you\u00a0create your campaign\u00a0strategy, recruit and empower your\u00a0team.
