Last year stress, depression, and anxiety were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0fa0c3;\"><a style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/mhfaengland.org\/mhfa-centre\/research-and-evaluation\/mental-health-statistics\/#workplace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">responsible for 54% of all working days<\/a><\/span> lost to ill health.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><a style=\"color: #33cccc; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mind.org.uk\/news-campaigns\/news\/work-is-biggest-cause-of-stress-in-people-s-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\">One in five people<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span> will take a day off from work due to stress, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mind.org.uk\/news-campaigns\/news\/work-is-biggest-cause-of-stress-in-people-s-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc; text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\">90% of those<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> who do so report a different reason for their absence. This may come as little surprise when you consider the fact that work is the most stressful factor in people\u2019s lives, with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0fa0c3;\"><a style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mind.org.uk\/news-campaigns\/news\/work-is-biggest-cause-of-stress-in-people-s-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">34% percent of people saying their work-life is stressful<\/a><\/span> \u2014 that\u2019s more than debt and financial problems (30%) or health (17%).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s clear that something, or perhaps many things, common in working experience has to change in order to improve workers&#8217; mental health. Poor mental health affects <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0fa0c3;\"><a style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/stress\/mental-health.htm\">one in four people<\/a> <\/span>in the UK and causes more than <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0fa0c3;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">70 million missed workdays<\/a><\/span><\/span> each year.<\/p>\n<h2>Employers should pay more attention to wellbeing<\/h2>\n<p>Looking after mental health at work will satisfy two goals: rewarding natural empathetic feelings towards our colleagues and improving organizational functioning.<\/p>\n<p>UK line managers are moving in the right direction, with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0fa0c3;\"><a style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bitc.org.uk\/report\/mental-health-at-work-2019-time-to-take-ownership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">69% of them<\/a><\/span> reporting that supporting employee wellbeing is a core skill. However, only 13% of UK line managers have received basic mental health training despite 35% expressing interest in basic instruction regarding common mental health conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, the past few months have brought unexpected challenges to workers, employers, and working conditions. Covid-19 pushed <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0fa0c3;\"><a style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hso.co.uk\/leased-lines\/technology-news\/homeworking-news\/50-of-uk-workforce-to-work-remotely-by-2020#main-content\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">half of the adults in employment to work from home<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>This express transition to remote work upended existing practices and familiar environments, causing <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0fa0c3;\"><a style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global\/2020\/jun\/21\/im-broken-how-anxiety-and-stress-hit-millions-in-uk-covid-19-lockdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">uncertainty and anxiety for millions of workers<\/a><\/span>. And now that lockdown restrictions have started to ease, new challenges to mental health at work are emerging: anxiety regarding using public transport to commute, stress caused by finding new childcare arrangements, fear of a second wave of Covid-19, and reluctance to leave now-familiar home working environments all deserve attention from employers.<\/p>\n<h2>Guidance for managing mental health at work<\/h2>\n<p>Understanding the needs of your employees and the steps needed to address them is the cornerstone of delivering high-quality support and assistance. Consider the guidance below to inform your organizational wellbeing choices, priorities, and practices.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Encourage colleagues to be open about mental health.<\/span><\/strong> It is vital that your colleagues feel safe disclosing sensitive information and being themselves. Fear of judgment, ostracism, and punishment can limit the reporting of mental health difficulty at work. Last year, 9% of employees who disclosed mental health issues to their manager <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0fa0c3;\"><a style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/mhfaengland.org\/mhfa-centre\/research-and-evaluation\/mental-health-statistics\/#workplace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported being disciplined, dismissed, or demoted<\/a><\/span>. Make it clear that your organization is committed to supporting all employees\u2019 mental health, ensuring that your colleagues know how to report issues, and seek help.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Promote physical activity.<\/span><\/strong> Regular exercise boosts self-esteem and can help you concentrate, sleep, and feel better. You don\u2019t need to dish out weightlifting regimes and mandate marathon participation: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0fa0c3;\"><a style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise<\/a><\/span> five days a week is recommended by experts. Encourage your colleagues to be physically active at work, taking walks during lunch, or participating in on-site activities.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Communicate support effectively and often. <\/span><\/strong>Far too often, organizations invest in wellbeing resources that go unused, not because they aren\u2019t wanted or needed, but because they aren\u2019t known. Make sure your wellbeing resources are familiar to all workers and are easily accessible in a discreet manner.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Reduce uncertainty. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0fa0c3;\"><a style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/alicegwalton\/2016\/03\/29\/uncertainty-about-the-future-is-more-stressful-than-knowing-that-the-future-is-going-to-suck\/#6552c970646a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Uncertainty is undesirable<\/a><\/span>. Research <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0fa0c3;\"><a style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/ncomms10996\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shows<\/a><\/span> that the uncertainty of outcomes is more stressful than the certainty of negative outcomes. Try to keep your workers in the loop regarding organizational challenges and changes to working practices. This advice is more relevant than ever given the shifting sands caused by Covid-19.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Put colleagues in contact with each other. <\/span><\/strong>Creating an environment where workers communicate effectively in general supports employee wellbeing. Provide your colleagues with the tools they need to speak to each other, keeping this technology as streamlined as possible. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0fa0c3;\"><a style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/topics-tools\/news\/all-things-work\/dealing-social-isolation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Social isolation<\/a><\/span> can creep in at work, and given the nature of the issue, it doesn\u2019t make a lot of noise or cause obvious disruption. Regular check-ins with line managers and teams, as well as more casual conversations about life outside of work or nothing, in particular, can mitigate isolation and bring struggles to light before they escalate.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Support work-life balance. <\/span><\/strong>Common symptoms of an unhealthy work-life balance are fatigue, increased infection, difficulty concentrating, and heightened stress and irritability. When left unchecked, this imbalance can lead to burn-out, which has been <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0fa0c3;\"><a style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/28-05-2019-burn-out-an-occupational-phenomenon-international-classification-of-diseases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recognized by the WHO<\/a><\/span> as an \u201coccupational phenomenon\u201d in their International Classification of Diseases. Support your workers\u2019 work-life balance by promoting openness about workloads and deadlines, encouraging working smart not long, and implement clear policies about boundaries between work and home life.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Celebrate and recognize. <\/span><\/strong>Employees want their good work to be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0fa0c3;\"><a style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/05\/recognizing-employees-is-the-simplest-way-to-improve-morale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recognized<\/a><\/span> frequently, authentically, and generously. A Gallup survey found that doubling the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0fa0c3;\"><a style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/238085\/state-american-workplace-report-2017.aspx?g_source=link_newsv9&amp;g_campaign=item_223025&amp;g_medium=copy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">number of employees who receive recognition<\/a><\/span> for their work on a weekly basis delivers a 24% improvement in the quality of work and a 27% reduction in absenteeism for organizations. This demonstrates that looking after your employee and appreciating their contributions is good for your business.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Successful mental health support efforts can help reach and educate all employees and can be incorporated into the everyday work environment and culture. Whether employees are in need of acute help, support through a difficult period, or reassurance that their company cares, organizations should have comprehensive mental health and wellbeing plans and resources in place.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0fa0c3;\"><a style=\"color: #0fa0c3; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/welbot.io\/\" target=\"_blank\"
